I love Elixir, but I love Erlang, too. In my opinion, there's little enough to justify the change in language, and certainly little enough in the capabilities to even justify giving it thought.

Elixir Mix is a weekly show focused on the Elixir programming community. Our panel why he built Elixir. The panel wonders why José did not just use Erlang.

Hence, start out with Elixir. Elixir is written in Erlang and Elixir. Erlang and Elixir are completely identical in first two roles - they target the same “thing” (EVM), and they both take a functional approach. It is in role three where Elixir improves on Erlang, and gives us additional tools to organize our code, and hopefully be more efficient in writing production-ready, maintainable code. Elixir is an impure dynamic functional language where IO operates on its own green-threadlike process. This is from Erlang as well, but the concept of dynamic languages, and functional languages is not a new one.

Erlang does not know the types flowing through a call site in advance and therefore has to do dynamic dispatch. Elixir's syntax is more modern and less confusing (Erlang's syntax is built on Prolog). Erlang has my favorite community of any pl since everybody is into what I'm into. So I use both, in greenfield projects I will write elixir, when I am working on other erlang devs code bases, I will use erlang, when I want examples on how to do shit right I look at erlang code bases. elixir vs erlang, why pick the former?

The more we learned about Elixir, the more we understood its strength over Ruby and how it could tremendously benefit our business.

Therefore, both offer similar capabilities and features. Elixir vs Erlang: Their differences.

It seems that Elixir is cranking out a lot of stuff that Erlang never really got: A web framework, Phoenix that seems to have a lot of work going into it. Erlang has several web servers, like Yaws, and the excellent Cowboy, as well as some other bits and pieces that work well. But Erlang has been lacking in the framework space.

It covers everything and always helps solving any problem you may have. Both Elixir and Erlang generate bytecode for the same runtime (the BEAM), so generally speaking, neither allows you to build stuff that could not be done with the other. Elixir has a much, much friendlier syntax than Erlang, but if you really want to use it to its full potential, you won’t get around learning some Erlang in the process.
